CGE 2 X F40T12 rapid start ballast from 06/82, still working! I am amazed by the quality of those 80s ballasts! They've leaked, supposing they're fried, but nope! In a complete opposite kind of situation, I've got some ballasts litteraly mint-looking, yet they were open. I'm curious to know if GE ballasts made in USA in the same era (80s) were still of qood quality. At least those made here in Canada are impressive! Oh and note the pic was taken using my new HP v5061u camcorder! Not the greatest to take pics but it's way less energy-consuming than my Kodak Z812IS. Keywords: Gear

I'm curious to know if GE ballasts made in USA in the same era (80s) were still of qood quality. At least those made here in Canada are impressive!

UPDATE 01/05/11: I performed a 90 min. test and the ballast doesn't overheat, meaning the ballast is perfectly fine! I consider installing that ballast in my basement.

my 1973 Advance is like this,there's a leak right at the leadwires and the paper label looks scorched but the ballast works just fine.

Nice ballast! So even if it has leaked, if it doesn't overheat within the 90 minute test window it's safe to say it's good? If it does happen to overheat, will it take out the lamps with it? I say that because I'd hate to kill one of my good lamps...

I don't know but I think the thermal protection would just trip off and on unless it shorted, which WOULD kill the lamps...
