[Gone] Powerlite B2215
Here's a old Powerlite light that looks like a bigger version of the B2217. There is only a few of these still lighting a street here in Ontario but some older parking lots still have MV ones in use.

This one is on Hwy. 85 in Waterloo which still for the most part resembles how a urban freeway in Ontario looked back in the 70s.

There used to be be a lot of these along with its bigger brother, the B2213 on Hwy. 401 but they were all wiped out by HPS cobras and highmast lighting in the early 90s.

[b]Here's a pic of some of these on the 401 in 1967:[/b]

Thanks to Dave for telling me the model # of this.

Its a 6ft arm, the MTO (Ministry of Transport Ontario) used these for years and they tend to over do things.

Yep a 6 ft luminaire truss used from the mid-late 60s to the early-mid 90s for freeway lighting. I've always had a liking to these arms for some reason. The pictured one looks like a 60s-70s style though, and yeah MTO tends to over do things.

Now they use 8' tapered e arms or highmast lights.
gailgrove   [Apr 24, 2011 at 01:27 AM]
Yeah kind of like this which I'm pretty sure the MTO was responsible for.

Same with here where they used highmast on a arterial road. They also put pole bases on a bridge that was lit with highmast once.

I think I went through there once too, and had the same shocked reaction Shocked

Sometimes I wonder who designs this stuff Smile
gailgrove   [Apr 24, 2011 at 01:50 AM]
Maybe them! Laughing

Here's them hard at work. Laughing
gailgrove   [Apr 24, 2011 at 01:56 AM]
Yeah, MTO "engineers" hard at work Rolling Eyes Laughing

You know what's funny, how did a pic about a unknown cobrahead turn to a discussion on monkeys Laughing Razz
gailgrove   [Apr 24, 2011 at 02:02 AM]
I'm not sure Laughing

Hey Niall, check out this intersection on Hwy. 7.
Crosswalks going into guardrails? Shocked Rolling Eyes
gailgrove   [May 04, 2011 at 09:59 PM]
WOW Shocked their at it again Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
joe_347V   [May 04, 2011 at 10:08 PM]
I wonder who thought of that one and if anyone even used the thing.

Here's another good one but it wasn't MTO though: driveway crosswalks!
gailgrove   [May 04, 2011 at 10:12 PM]
The city of Brampton did that here too

And now back to our scheduled MTO programming: another one and they even put in a left turn arrow for the driveway Razz
gailgrove   [May 04, 2011 at 10:21 PM]
That would make turning out of your driveway convenient Razz
joe_347V   [Sep 01, 2011 at 01:56 AM]
You know I actually wonder if MTO chose to use truss arms back in the 60s because they wanted to use a arm that would offer a greater margin of safety with the heavier lumes they used back then.

Parts of the 401 used B2213s after the addition of express/collector lanes in the 60s...not exactly what I call a light lume.
streetlight98   [Sep 01, 2011 at 02:18 AM]
Truss arms were also "decorative"too. Decorative in a simple way.
joe_347V   [Sep 01, 2011 at 02:21 AM]
Yeah but I don't normally associate MTO with being aesthetically inclined when designing stuff.
