Ripley Lighting Controls Shorting/Open Caps Internals
Here are the three models of Ripley shorting and open caps I have opened up. It is interesting how they use a tiny circuit board instead of a small piece of wire like some other manufacturers. Even the open cap has a circuit board, only missing the connection between the line and load.

Sounds like flat wire could invite shorter life than the regular strand wire to me Confused

Why is there a MOV tagged to the hot and neutral of the second one?

Surge protection of the light. You can order shorting caps with surge protectors though they don't usually come standard. Photocells normally have surge protection standard.
