National Grid Training Facility: Regulator
On the pole in the center of the pic there's a transformer at the top of the pole and a regulator toward the bottom (though normally would be mounted toward the top of the pole; it's low down for demonstration purposes and none of it is live). The regulator regulates the voltage based on peak times and stuff. It had some cooling fins that you can barely see toward the right hand side of it. I joked that it looked like a giant coffee mug.

Also, kinda hard to see in the pic, but the top shelf of that rack just to the right of the opened bay door (look to the left of the utility pole the regulator is on) there's a big cardboard box. It's marked GENERAL (GE) ELECTRIC. Anyone wanna guess what that is? ;-)

We haven't even gotten the tour of the exterior of the facility (which parts of are indeed live; there's several street lights outside and for some reason they're all intentional dayburners, perhaps to signal that the poles are live).

Must be a cobrahead in the box. Wink

Yep! Judging by the size of the box and the ED23.5 HPS lamp on top, I'd say it's a 50-150W HPS (though I don't know if NGrid uses 150W HPS in MA, they don't in Rhode Island) M-250R2 but the label on the box wasn't visible. The box is factory-sealed though. Way cool!

Above the regulator is the bypass switch. We install these on them for the purpose of taking them offline without disrupting service to the main distribution line.

Ah that's cool. I do remember our instructor saying something about taking these offline to service them but I was distracted by the street light inside the shop lol. Very Happy
