LOL. MASSDOT has five 4X 400W HPS highmast poles on I-95 right after the Pawtucket, RI/Attelboro, MA line and two of the five poles have been switched to LED highmasts (the poles are still the same, the fixtures were changed). I wonder how bright they are at night...
Have you seen the LEDs that RIDOT put up? They installed some LEDs at the Rte 10/Reservoir Ave interchange and on Rte 6 over at that curve where the old Plainfield Street exit was. They're LeoTek LEDs (the ones that look like toilets).
Only government would fund LEDs, RI Communist party is on the rise so people in RI are not smart LPS is the way to go I have seen the LEDs they are worse than HPS. If I ever ran in RI as a green party person I would have all LPS, and get government out of all street lights and lights I think HPS is trash so is LED street lights. Israel is putting in some LPS so is Iceland Hawaii just put in LOTS like well over 10,000 of LPS 180w too.
A lot of people are not very smart in general and it's been getting worse over the past decade. A few years ago, Tarentum changed all of their lighting to LED's and now the whole town looks pitch black.
Up in the Torronto area it sounds like the LED test units up there are getting spot-replaced with HPS 115s.
If I was in charge, I'd be installing all PSMH/CMH or induction lighting. LED fixtures look too ugly mostly and LPS is too yellow. HPS is bad enough but LPS is even yellower. I like LPS for its uniqueness but not its color. I like nice white light.
I think the bigger issue is the design of the fixtures. there are decorative teadrop lights in Providence and you could almost mistake them for PSMH if you didn't look clearly and notice there's no lamp in the teardrop refractor. The problem of the terrible distribution is because manufacturers are still experimenting with how to get the most out of these LEDs. LEDs are different from any other light source with the fact that they're extremely concentrated light sources (which translates to glarey) so the tried and true reflector designs don't work with LEDs. In the next two decades LEDs will more than likely be much better. they'll have better distribution and the cost of production should go down some. All the problems with the drivers are from companies other than GE from what I've seen. GE makes their own drivers but almost everyone else uses Philips Advance drivers and we all know how great their Intellivolt electronic ballasts/drivers are.
GE's really ahead of the game with LED fixtures. Their fixtures look at least somewhat decent by day and they use reflectors to direct the LEDs instead of a flat panel which makes them cast the light further and cuts the glare back somewhat. Unfortunately I don't see LED street lights looking any more asthetically pleasing. They have some nice looking shoebox LEDs so that proves they can use existing fixture designs but they're just choosing not to. So the cobrahead design is something that we're going to have to learn to live without (on the streets anyways). But I don't see cobraheads disappearing opvernight.
RI didn't see its first LED freeway lights until this month. They installed two small scale installations of LeoTek LEDs (the ones that look like toilet tops) on davit poles.
