Found this in the basement of a old antique store. O_o Note the ceramic knobs supporting some of the cloth wires too. I guess they might be original to the house (late 1890s- early 1900s).
The original panel had been replaced sometime over the years though, pics below.
I'm guessing that's where the panel used to be originally, no clue why though. Anyway I know some places when they upgrade the service, they leave the old panel in place and use it as a giant junction box.
A lot of breaker panels are installed in odd directions here in Canada. Mine is upside down, probably so that the unfused wires are as short as possible in the panel. American code dosen't allow this though, since the main breaker must flip down for off.
The direction of the panel is often influenced by the height of the service conduit on the wall, height of the wall itself, etc. The panel is usually main breaker up, but if the conduit is too low on the wall, the panel is installed upside down so it's not ridiculously low. Come to think of it, it's a more logical way to go than simply following the "up on, down off" rule LOL.
Yeah I know what you mean...I've also seen old breaker boxes used as giant junction boxes before so that they don't have to rewire the whole place...wires all still terminating to the same place.
I have a breaker panel code violation going in my house too...it's IN THE BATHROOM! It's kinda the utility room though (Washer and dryer are in there and the water heater used to be until we redid the plumbing) and I'm not gonna touch it when I'm wet but I can't imagine shower steam, etc. is good for it...but on the "Bright" side there's a hallway on the other side of that wall so I guess I could turn the panel around and still have all the wires going to the same place.
in your bathroom eh? well if you think about it, it shouldn't be too bad since most basements and garages are humid too (though if the thing is right next to the shower and you take really steamy showers i wouldn't touch it either lol. I take relatively cool showers compared to my mom an brother lol. once in a while i'll take a really hot shower though and the vanity light bulbs will be all wet lol.
