My G.E. M400 Here is my newest addition to my collection. A G.E. M400 that I found on the ground a few weeks ago. It was laying on the ground next to a wood pole that looked like it had been hit by a car. The arm is still attached to the pole, but the pole is leaning back. I guess whoever installed this M400 did not tighten the slipfitter bolts enough, so it slipped off the arm. Surprisingly, the refractor, lamp, and photocontrol are still intact. The only damage to this M400 is a small crack in the upper housing, and it still works. Keywords: American_Streetlights

Nice light! Looks in tact and in good condition. Have you fired it up yet? Does it still work?

I need to get rid of some of my lights, and get some others.

Yeah it still works. However the ballast is pretty loud in this light. Could that be because it fell off the arm and hit the ground?

Yeah something may be loose inside the fixture. Look around for any loose screwsand tighten them. If you don't find any, if you want, remove the ballast (and the other electrical components) from the fixture and put the balalst on a countertop and plug it in (making sure the coils ARE NOT touching the counter LOL) If the ballast is still loud, it has some loose coils from being knocked off the pole (which isn't at all bad, it just means it's louder). If it isn't loud, you didn't look hard enough for loose screws lol.

My M-400 "split door" is pretty loud because the fixture is just designed very loosely, if that makes sense. No matter how much i tighten the screws (remember to not over-tighen, as the screws are stronger than the cast aluminum) it's still loud becuase the refractor and refractor door aren't super snug, they kinda "float around" when the fixture is latched. If i press the refractor door and top housing together, it's quiet but when i let go, the fixture vibrates, making it sound louder. Now, my 60s M-250R ballast is VERY loud even when not in a fixture. I can't even imagine how loud it'd be if i put it into a fixture! Shocked

Your ballast might have always been loud though since GE ballasts are sometimes known to be a little louder than other manufacturer's ballasts.

My AE 125 Series has a loud ballast too, most CWI ballasts are.

I took everything out of this M400 when I first got it so I could vaccuum all the bugs out. Every screw in it got removed. I took the ballast out, the terminal block, the slipfitter clamps, ignitior, and reflector and made sure I got everything I could out of there. I even used a small screwdriver to get these spider web/egg nest looking things out of the screw holes and tight corners in this fixture. I wanted to make sure I wouldn't have spider eggs hatching in there since I keep this fixture in the bedroom. And I don't like spiders.

Ahh i do the same, but with the hose on "Jet" mode instead of doing all that lol. i feel the same way about the spiders. I don't like insects. But that has nothing to do with how loud the ballast is. Try turning the ballast on when it's on a table or countertop intead of in the fixture and see how much of a difference there is with the loudness.

Mike, if the coils are touching something will it short out the ballast by arcing to ground or something or will it just vibrate?
