I guess the designer didn't realize that you can still shoot other areas of the fixture that are unprotected. IMO, while ballistic/vandal shields do make lights harder to vandalize, they just make the lowlives more determined to shoot the light out. Not to mention they reduce light output as they yellow and are a painful eye sore to look at.
They have the same thing down the road in Newark ,DE in the projects but these have a curve on the bottom for the drop lens and there yellowed from the lamp's heat. GE's as well, I believe 400 watt HPS.
A vandal shiel is problebly simalar for rocks bb guns and shuch low volacity things a ballistics shield is for high powered weapons.. hand gun, rifle, rocket launchers, Inter conntenental ballistic missles, etc......
Well, anyone with brains would know the light can be shot at from the side! And if a bullet punches a hole in the side of the light then it'll need to be repalced anyways since rain will short it out.
Yeah, putting a vandal shield on a streetlight is like putting FRAGILE stickers all over packages of lamps...it just INCREASES the chance of it being destroyed by the postal service!
Would be interesting to see how much light output is reduced...especially once they are covered with dirt & bugs..
