Commercial sign lit by INCANDESCENT bulbs!
This strip mall in Corona, CA still uses signs that use incandescent bulbs for backlighting. This sign is empty but it is on the side of a restaurant which is still in business, there are also the same style of signs in the front with the business name on it. Quite a sight in the post incandescent ban era these days. These bulbs appear to be ordinary soft whites you buy in the stores. The bulbs appear to be GE to my eyes. Knowing my experience fixing lights on the job, ordinary bulbs can be a pain to maintain. You are looking into a group replacement of these sign lights every 2-3 months if you use 60w, 120v, 1000 hour bulbs. Of course the problem is solved if you used commercial grade long life bulbs such as Duro-Test, Marvel, Aero-Tech, Newcandescent, or even the new Sylvania Rough Service XL bulbs.

There is a sign near my home in which clear incandescent lamps make up the letters. It isn't maintained well, so it becomes essentially illegible with almost all bulbs burned out before someone relamps it.

How can you tell if they're GE without looking at the base, etch, etc.?
I guess CFLs would work as long as they aren't flashed or anything.

That's pretty cool, but if you used 60w incandescents that would be a LOT of energy used just to backlight a sign. Are these supposed to use 11w S14 lamps?

Nope they'd have to be at least 60w to get the same brightness as a fluorescent backlit sign. S14 lamps are for marquee signs. Back before the 60s energy was REALLY cheap, so the power consumption probably wasn't a big deal. This sign is probably from before that though, when a fluorescent alternative wasn't feasible yet.
