Westinghouse 400w Mercury Vapor /W (White)
Lamp is at about 30% run-up on M-57 metal-halide ballast. At full brightness, it appears to have a very pleasant color. This is the first "new" /W lamp I have seen up close. The red rendering doesn't seem as bad as I'd imagined.

Pretty! Any idea on the year yet? 60s I'd guess...

Nice! I have an NOS late 60s Sylvania 400W /C cleartop. My only /C lamp. Really cool. Wish I had more since I like the color. Never had a /W lamp though. Is it similar kelvin-wise to a /W fluorescent tube?
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Nov 14, 2014 at 01:13 AM]
Nah more like /D from what I understand but I've only seen /DX in person.

Ah I think the /N lamps are similar to /CW or /W though. They're warmer and were popular in supermarkets before MH lamps became popular.

Nice! I have a used GE 175w /W and to me it sorta looked like a 5000K or even a daylight fluorescent. I have a late model /N which sorta looked like a yellower /DX. Apparently the earlier /Ns were a lot warmer than /DX.

Yeah I remember you comparing it to a /DX.

Yeah I heard the older /Ns actually used a different phosphor but from what I understand, they just use regular /DX phosphors with a yellow tint to them.

With a cobrahead, you can achieve the effect of a /N lamp with a /DX MV lamp and a browned out polycarbonate lens. I do that in my room sometimes. Right now I have my 175W MV M-250R1 in my room with a clear lamp and a busted browned out lens, so it's a yellowish green color with a streak of blue-white through the center of the refractor where the refractor split open about 1/4". It had a crack and I dropped it and split it so now it can mimic pacman, not quite cracked in two, but split down the middle with only the backside holding the two halfs together lol.

If I get some spare time, I want to compare a /DX, /C, and /W in 175w in a pic. Unfortunately, they'll be different brands but at least might give somewhat an idea of phosphor difference.

Ahh that sounds really interesting to see. Smile
