Would the T12 ever crack like a T8? I'd imagine with a dead lamp, wouldn't the slimline ballast suffer?

No. Once it's past the rectification stage (totally dead) it's just like a missing lamp. So a slimline that's been totally out for months/years could easily still have a good ballast. Another thing I've heard is to give it 30 minutes after putting new lamps in to let thermal cutout reset if you just removed a bad lamp.
