World War II era THREE lamp preheater!
My newest addition for only FIVE bucks!

This is a really old 3 lamp preheat fixture with exposed ballast. The exposed ballast is due to needing to save metals for WWII weapons. So this fixture also has an historic significance. The WW II was the reason of this fixture design basically.

It now belongs in my collection.

It included two lamps. Both lamps did not have an ordering code.
They have already been dated. Both are daylight
GE dating to 4th quarter of 1950!
Sylvania dating to Jan 1957!

What do you think guys?

Sweet! I guess it's an F40 fixture?

My only pieces from the World War II era are two GE F20T12/Ds, one being at EOL. I used to have 2 working specimens but I traded one (plus some more vintage tubes) with Henry.

Yes it is a 3 lamp F40 fixture

Sweet! I don't have any stuff from the WWII era and I think my oldest fluorescent fixture is either from the late
40 or the 50s.

This fixture is estimated to be from 1945.....and there was coded numbers under the ballast that said "S5" Possible September 1945?

Do you know when were Spec No 6 starters last used? That's what my light came with.
GullWhiz   [Jan 29, 2012 at 08:39 PM]
not sure exactly but I know they are pre-60s

Very nice find, and $5! You must be guilty of stealing it! Razz

Missed the $5 part in my first comment, that's a really great SCORE! Cool

That's why reading is important Wink

CAW! I am the one who found this thing at Forklift. I was inspecting it when the Gull flew in and told me it was old. Then I debated in my head either let the feathered friend have it or risk WWIII with my folks by taking it home with me. I then decided to let this Gull have it.

This thing is HEAVY. The reflector is THICK! REALLY THICK! Like you wouldn't believe!

Imagine if the folks that make today's lights were to travel back in time to WWII or Pre-WWII... <GETS COLD CHILL DOWN SPINE!> Shocked
GullWhiz   [Jan 31, 2012 at 04:36 AM]
Felipe....lid today's fixtures went back in time and got metal reduction.....

That would be exposed ballast, sockets simply hung with strings, nothing else...only reflector is painted silvery stuff on LAMP!
streetlight98   [Aug 16, 2012 at 11:07 PM]
Great score! How come the left starter is isolated from the other two?
GullWhiz   [Aug 16, 2012 at 11:09 PM]
Don't ask me, but it's a 3 lamp fixture....

I think this is the earlier version of mine. I see the reflector is the same design but mine's a enclosed unit instead of a open unit like yours.
