Pacific Electricord 6-Outlet Surge Protection Outlet Splitter with Alarm
Here is a totally awesome surge protector that I picked up from a thrift store yesterday! It appears to be a very obscure model, as I can't find any info about it online. It has three outlets on either side, plus coax protection on the bottom. It's labeled as being a 'Full Protection Surge Suppressor,' so I wonder if it has power filtering in addition to surge suppression. The cool part is the alarm on the top, which I assume will sound when the surge suppression goes bad. This model is from the 1990s.

And now you can wake up the whole family after a power surge! Laughing

Already annoyed mine when I pressed the alarm test button on the top! Embarrassed

What is the purpose of the alarm here?
Our surge protectors here in Israel, don't have sound alarm.
Also I usually prefers surge protector with built in 2-4 delay and low/high mains voltage protection, which are usually have only one socket and power strips can be connected to them.

The purpose of the alarm is to let you know if the surge protection circuit is worn out, and it needs to be replaced. A built-in alarm isn't very common, and usually it is only found on professional surge protectors in places like hospitals and datacenters.

Isn't when the surge protector has done its job and needs to be replaced, it just shorting and tripping the breaker?
HIDLad001   [Sep 03, 2023 at 01:37 PM]
Usually the metal oxide varistors inside go low resistance and get very hot, which trips a thermal fuse.
dor123   [Sep 10, 2023 at 11:36 AM]
Which thermal fuse? The one in the MOV or an external one?
HIDLad001   [Sep 11, 2023 at 11:56 AM]
It can either be integrated into the MOV package or a separate component that is placed next to the MOV.
dor123   [Sep 11, 2023 at 01:27 PM]
Here in Israel, most surge protectors have their MOVs unprotected (No thermal fuse), so when they gets hot, they may catch fire. I've know about only one manufacturer in Israel that made surge protectors with thermally protected MOVs, and it is Q-Trade, but it went bankrupt.
Here in Israel, when a surge protector has done its job after capturing lots of surge or a lightning discharge, it shorting and tripping the breaker.
