MTO/Toronto Highway Past/Present Lighting
Here is a shot i took recently over the Gardner Expressway in Toronto where there are both Highmasts (presently most common install), Truss lights (Past) and a few tapered arms which are rarely installed on MTO freeway's. Currently except for when spacing is limited, Airports, and where residential is very close to the highway and concerns of light pollution are present new Cobra's get installed on new Tapered E arms typically 8ft. The Truss lights here used to support Model 25's when first installed and now predominantly AE 125's, and GE M400's. 2, or 3 Model 25's are still in use in the stretch at an on ramp, and one on the right side of the picture but barely visible behind the one pole with 2 tapered arms. Not sure why this small stretch was never ripped up and given the highmast treatment back in 90's

I believe the full stretch of this highway, the Garnder Expressway, was fully downloaded for the city of Toronto to maintain. I believe the black highmasts and these 125's on shorter e arms were installed by city of Toronto.

The black highmasts were installed by City Of Toronto and the concrete 125's on the earms. The Truss lights were MTO but were turned over to the City at sometime

Nice shot.

Yeah, what Matt said is correct. I believe it was downloaded either in 1997 or 1998. The truss lights are from the MTO era and I believe the newer poles with the tapered e arms used to be truss poles too.

I'm not sure why the truss lighting remained but it gives a nice look into how MTO lighting on a collector/express highway looked before the high mast era.

Yeah lets hope they last at-least another decade or two. The reason is probably to do with lighting distribution along the collectors but why they didnt just use a median highmast like most of MTO i dont know.

My guess would probably be Toronto wanted to replace the aging poles and guard rail median on a relative budget so installing poles and arms similar to the MTO truss poles was cheaper than redoing the lighting with highmast.
