That's weird! I like it though. Usually they leave a few troffers on after hours.

I used to find these in pharmacies and there were a few Radio Shack stores that also had LPS fixtures. In several cases, the LPS fixtures were in a 2x2 square recessed fixture - so it kind of looked like another fluorescent. Nice to see one of these still running!

I wonder why it was on during store hours... Neutral

I guess they were letting it warm up for the night as his post on LG said the store was about to close.
GullWhiz   [Sep 29, 2012 at 06:07 PM]
I know a few places near me that has those......
streetlight98   [Sep 29, 2012 at 07:06 PM]
ahh that makes sense then... How long do LPS take to warm up? I know it's kinda long but isn't restrike just a few seconds?
GullWhiz   [Sep 29, 2012 at 07:16 PM]
Restrike is instant, warm up is between 8 to 15 min depending on cerumstances.
joe_347V   [Sep 29, 2012 at 10:23 PM]
I've noticed that LPS tends to be a bit slower to warm up than other HIDs.
GullWhiz   [Sep 29, 2012 at 11:07 PM]
LPS isn't actually considered an HID....but more of the same category the fluorescent is in.....fluorescent lights are basically low pressure MV while LPS are HPS in low pressure with more neon in it

Yeah, I guess discharge lamp would have been the more correct term. Razz

@Jace, would you call it a LID > Low Intensity Discharge? Very Happy Very Happy And yes it was near closing. The T8 fluorescents were lighting it well, the camera just compensated and made it look darker.

Looks like those fixtures were once two lamp F96T12s... There's a Michael's arts and crafts store near me that had these fixtures with F96T12 magnetic ballasts and lamps until jut recently. Now the fixtures have four F32T8 lamps a piece. I wonder why F32T8 retrofits are so much more common than F96T8 retrofits. Seems like more work to maintain twice the amount of lamps... 8ft T8 fixtures are almost non-existant here. i've only seen them at a newer Benny's hardware, and they're factory T8 not retrofits.

I think some lighting companies encourage the F32s by saying that they are easier to handle than the F96T8s and that they come in more colours. Personally I think it's a waste of time to retrofit a 8ft fixture to twin 4ft and those retrofits always either never fits correctly or completely destroys the old fixtures.

8ft T8 fixtures are very rare here too, I've only seen them used a lot in Zellers stores here (retrofitted from F96T12, will be scrapped in a few months when Target moves in as Target uses troffers).

Nice to see such LPS security lights still in use. The only other LPS security light fixture I know of is a 35 or 55 watt Philips unit at the Jo-Ann Fabrics (formerly a Cloth World) in Brea. It seems to have been out of use for a while as the bulb was missing.

Joe, my Uncle has an auto repair garage and he had a T8 conversion done two years ago by Anaheim Public Utilities. The 8 foot fixtures in the service bays were converted to F96T8 using GE UltraMax ballasts and SPX50 lamps. One of them just went out last Tuesday so I'm now on the search for replacement 8 foot T8 tubes. Four foot F32T8 lamps are a lot more common in locally

The clerks said they are on 24/7.

Benny's has a central system so when the lights go out the hid comes on.
streetlight98   [Feb 05, 2014 at 02:51 AM]
Yeah the Benny's near me had HPS wallpacks on the support columns that they turn on when the close up shop for the night. One time i was in there on a sunday when they were ready to close and saw the guy turn on the lights. So i got to see them all warm up. Smile

the HPS lights aren't hooked up to any special system though. they're wired to a switch just like the fluorescents. When they shut off the fluorescents they just flick on the switch for the HPS lights.
traffic light1   [Feb 05, 2014 at 01:07 PM]
But all of the Benny's have a central generator
streetlight98   [Feb 05, 2014 at 02:54 PM]
So the HPS lights are their emergency heads? interesting. I thought HID couldn't be used on generators because of the higher current they draw at warm-up. It would have made more sense to run every third fluorescent on an emergency ballast but being inside the store while only the HPS is on would be really cool! Shocked Very Happy When i was there the fluorescents were still on but they had turned on the HPS beforethe store closed to let them warm up.
traffic light1   [Feb 05, 2014 at 11:33 PM]
Yes the HPS is on the central system and no, the emerald mall has the same set-up
