GEC "Diffractor" Z8128
This thrift shop building still sports a old GEC "Diffractor" Z8128. Since there's a ballast box next to the arm, I believe this is probably remote ballasted 250w or 400w MV.

It seems that GEC lights did see some use here in Toronto but it's kinda interesting seeing one here as they were mainly used in the UK.

Interesting light fixture. Cool to see it's still around! BTW, you have some tall street name signs! Shocked

Yeah they're pretty interesting looking. I suppose the modern equivalent would be those Holopahne buckets though. Razz Dunno why the street name signs are mounted so high, normally they're mounted the same height as the pedestrian signals.

Shocked a UK MA (medium presher mercury) streetlight in canida there from the 1940s VERY RARE id love to see the ballast I wonder if it has a 120V choke ballast for speshel MA lamps with an arc V of 65V desighned to be used on 120V mains with a standered choke?(iv nerver seen such a lamp but there listed in catalogs )

Never heard of such a lamp before. Shocked Must be really rare especially if it's medium pressure. I wonder about the ballast too, but I think it either has a 240v choke or a 120v HX type ballast.

GEC nerver made HX mercury chokes for a 110/120V places (this is just after the natinal grid got started so alot of places had odd voltages from 85-260V 50/60Hz) for Mercuy lamps they just made a MA lamp with a lower arc voltage to be used with a choke on 120V so i wonder if the streetlight here used em orignaly or it has GEC 240V brick i mean choke ? Razz

This is surprisinly still in use but it looks like they bypassed the ballast and installed a LED lamp.
