The Hinge
I bought a really beefy hinge. I had to chop off the bottom of it though for the thru-bolt lol. You can see the wimpy 4X4 mail box post spike sticking out the ground a bit I wish they sold them in 6X6. I could have just bought a 12ft 6X6 and cut it in two pieces and bury the shorter piece in the ground 2 or 3 feet but I was lazy and decided to just buy a mailbox spike and pound it in with a sledgehammer.

Came out really nice but it's just a little too rickety for my liking. I'll see how it holds up but I'll probably have to supplement this some how so it's sturdier. But I don't want to bolt too much onto it since it all has to come off in order to lower the pole. I have that piece of pipe to help (though it doesn't really do much lol) which is lagged to the pole with two bolts, which both have to be removed in order to allow the pole to hinge. Not a big deal, but not the way I intended it. I intended for just the one 10" 5/8" diameter bolt to be removed to allow the pole to hinge.

Is this set into the ground with concrete? I want to do something like this but my parents don't want me to set up anything permanent if we ever have to move. Would putting the post into a 5 gallon bucket a few feet down and filling that with concrete work? Also, how much did that hinge cost and where did you get it? I haven't seen anything like that at my local home improvement stores.

This is not in concrete. It's a 30" mailbox stake pounded into the ground with a sledgehammer (I actually used the 6x6, as you can see it's all scratched up, since I don't own a sledge and the 6x6 is pretty friggin heavy. Drove it in with no problem lol). There's no digging involved either. Personally, I think if you just direct-bury a 6x6 like 3ft in the ground you should be fine. Any less than 3ft deep I'd use some concrete though.

The hing was $7.98 from Home Depot. It's a gate hinge.
