sealed led acid battery. .not so sealed anymore
This one blew the side out, these 10AH batteries are popular in walgreens emergency lights which are sure-lites (made by cooper)
From what I've seen years of trickle charging without a good discharge tends to cause this, the lights on sales floor that are controlled by a breaker are usually ok because they will get drained annually for 90 min testing
Sometimes the stockroom emergency lights don't have a dedicated breaker meaning I have to disconnect it and let it run for 90 mins (usually I just push the test button instead) when the batteries are really worn out they don't come on when button is pressed
Most batteries fail sometime after 5 years, not making 90 mins They are unpredictable though

Shocked I'm surprised it didn't have a safety vent on top. I guess I should drain my emergency light since it's been plugged in for over a year now.

Batteries don't last forever. You need to replace depending on the battery life rating, just like automobile batteries have.

Continous charging causes sulphating of the plates and yes it is a good idea to cycle them. Batteries made in China are often found in lanterns and are not that good. and when left discharged for ages kills them. Best ones I have found are Sonnenchein and Yuasa and they will last for years if cycled and not let run down too much. This type of storage battery or accumulator must not be charge on too higher voltage / current if in doubt put battery in bowl of cold water with ice and then charge, heat destroys these, caution, contains sulphuric acid and lead.
