OVX with MH lamp installed now. Replced the coated 175 watt MV lamp with an MH lamp. Clear MH lamp. The optics aren't as good in my opinion, but the light is brighter. Not much difference in the picture, I replaced the incandescent lamps in the ceiling fixture with two daylight 20 watt CFL's. The light is much whiter and more blue in person, the camera liked to put a greenish tint to it. (Right? Green? Just want to make sure, I am minorly colorblind, and yellow and really light yellow green can mess me up, it looks green, but I would need to make sure) Much brighter, and all the white light is nice. The troffer above my computer is a warmer light, but it definitely is bright down here. Keywords: American_Streetlights

Nice! Yeah coated lamps have a smoother distribution patter than clear lamps but clear lamps have more precise distribution (clear lamps' light can be warped into the ANSI Type II, Type III, etc distribution patterns better than coated lamps because clear lamps have a more concentrated light source, since when the lamp gets coated, the envelope becomes the light source, at least that's my understanding). Coated lamps are easier on the eyes too, which is why i prefer them.

And yeah, the camera registered the lights as a sort of wintergreen mint color. At first I thought you were running a SBMV lamp in the dome light. That would be cool but i don't know if the dome light could handle a 160W SBMV lamp since those give off a lot of heat.

The light on the ceiling is rated for two 60 watt incandescent lamps, so I doubt that. xD I don't have any self ballasting MV lamps.

Most cameras like to turn MH into green for some reason. I guess the MH has a very green tint to it that eyes can't register. Does MH look white to you usually?

Hmm maybe the white balance is off. MH usually look either pure white or a warmish halogen-like color to me. When MH lamps are run vertically, they are usually a warmer tone compared to running sideways.

The MH light is kind of flashy though, if you look at it the right way you can register the tiny flickers that they usually do. Makes it not quite ideal for indoor, but meh, it's nice to have a streetlight light up my room normally.

One thing though the ballast was actually from an indoor fixture, high bay. It used to light the garage when I lived back in Bailey, but now the same ballast got removed from the high bay and inserted into the OVX, and now lights my room. I hope the ballast lasts.

Did you have to get rid of the highbay? Yeah MH can be a little flickery at times.

No I still have it, it's disassembled and cracked a bit, but it's laying in the garage. Don't have plans for it, but it has no ballast now.

I have six Holophane Prismalume glass highbays in my shed from 1998 that are also ballast-less, as they originally had 277V single tap ballasts. I got about a dozen lamps with the highbays (350W PSMH lamps). I have no plans for them right now either, thoughI wired one up to a cord for mogul base incandescent lamps. One or two have small cracks in the top housing from when I was getting the ballasts out with a hammer (swung and missed and ended up striking the cast aluminum body) because the ballasts were just wedged in with shims. The ballasts were all replacements since the lights were retrofitted from 400W MH/MV. Makes me wonder how the original ballasts were installed.
