This Settles It...
Okay, see the less-dirty section to the left of the side of the ballast? And that screw hole where someone wore the paint off removing the old ballast, presumably with a pair of needle-nose pliers judging by the marks? I'm posting a closeup of the ballast in this fixture too, a "US Fluorescent" NPF one.

This is the Sears shoplite? Yeah it definitely used to be HPF (and should be once again. Razz Very Happy )

Someday it's going to be Laughing hopefully with an Advance Kool-Koil or GE Bonusline or Universal Therm-O-Matic. The FIRST Sears light is HPF and I thought that was so cool at the time!

Yeah odd how HPF ballasts are so uncommon in your area. I have yet to find a non-HPF two-lamp F40 ballast (besides that stupid Benchlite ballast). Every light in my family is HPF except the single lamp strip light in my great-aunt's garage. Even the F20T12 Western Electric fixtures have full-power ballasts. My other F20s are all NPF though.

I find dead Advance HPF ballasts relatively often...I spent lots of hours underneath this light before it was removed and the previous owner and I were figuring it wasn't a full power HPF ballast judging by the brightness and cold temp behavior. (I'm taking a woodworking class in that room this fall I might add)

Now using this as a single lamp preheat ballast...shunted for one lamp with a starter inline with one pair of wires.
