philips SL*18 globe made in usa!
Heres a rare philips SL*18 globe made in usa. I thought i have never seen one, but i suddenly recognized this design as i have seen some at a bookstore back in the 80s as they gradually replaced the incandescent globes, now i know they are philips lol. They went back to incandescent in the 90s though... this one was made in june 1985.

Preheat or electronic?
streetlight98   [Jan 11, 2013 at 01:40 AM]
Ooo four months older than my Philips SR*18 75W= lamp. Cool
GullWhiz   [Jan 11, 2013 at 01:50 AM]
All SR*18 are electronic.....

I have two of them, one from 1991 and one from 1992.....one is a reflector style and other is a plastic cover style thingy LOL

philips did make the SL*17 globe with magnetic ballast at one time in the 90s though. by the way the SL*18 globe here turns out to be instant start! it still needs the warm up time though.
streetlight98   [Jan 11, 2013 at 11:22 PM]
yeah same with my tubular shaped one.

Do they just start out dim like my GE FLB/17 capsule or are they mercury starved at switch-on?
streetlight98   [Jan 12, 2013 at 12:13 AM]
Mine's just a little dim and it warms up. The older 80s CFLs has lots of yummy mercury in them unlike today's Curly Fry Lamps. Laughing

Even the older CFLs with the fatter tubes (like GE Helicals, which still do) have more mercury than the tiny 13w ones smaller than a 60w incandescent...however those are entertaining to watch warm up! Much like HID only with no restrike time...
streetlight98   [Jan 12, 2013 at 01:57 AM]
I'd love to make a decorative chandelier HID with cram MH lamps! Do they make normal (non-reflector) MH lamps under 50W? Since chandeliers have multiple lamps, I'd use a lower wattage or let's say in a five lamp fixture, two would be reveal incandescent and the other three MH. The color temp differences would be a little tacky though so maybe combine the MH with a CFL similar in kelvin rating...

Supposedly a 35w ED17 metal halide lamp exists, but I've never seen one. If they were plentiful (and if the ballasts were too), I would surely convert my front yard 35w HPS fixtures.

I think a 50w MV chandelier would be cool...with a 100w or 175w lamp in the middle downlight if there is one...
streetlight98   [Jan 12, 2013 at 08:30 PM]
I wouldn't want MV since the color isn't that great. It's impossible to find 50W MV stuff now, though i suppose with a pair of lamps they could be run in series off a 100W balast...
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jan 12, 2013 at 08:59 PM]
I was thinking phosphor coated lamps and running them in series or for a 40/50w lamp supposedly a single lamp preheat F40T12 ballast will work....
Silverliner14B   [Jan 12, 2013 at 11:56 PM]
I would love a mercury chandelier! Fyi, the 50w merc lamp operates at 90v not 130v that the other merc watttages operate on.
GEsoftwhite100watts   [Jan 13, 2013 at 12:39 AM]
So a simple "choke" ballast would work even here in 120v mains land?
