The mechanical monster
This Crouse Hinds PCN series mechanical controller operates the Crouse Hinds Type T cluster. This controller is fairly old...but its decades NEWER then the signals it is controlling. Its from the 1960s, and the traffic signals are from 1928.

It and the ancient signals are slated for removal as the masts are up for new signals, and a new NEMA cabinet and Econolite ASC/3 controller has been installed.

sweet controller,do they need oiling or some sort of lubrication every so often?
basilicon89   [May 29, 2011 at 12:28 AM]
the cam drum is sometimes oiled annually. These are built to withstand lengthy running periods without regular maintenance. The bulb keeps the cabinet warm in the winter to prevent the cycle unit from sticking

Do you have the pic of the signals that was up there? Nice find! By the way the lightbulb in the socket there is a nice Durotest Signal bulb! You can't have traffic lights without lightbulbs Wink

I know you aren't as interested in lights or lightbulbs...but why don't you try collecting TRAFFIC light lightbulbs of decades? I am actually curious because they tend to have specific designs compared to regular lightbulbs such as the "M" shaped filament!

Yes Here!

And you can have traffic lights without bulbs...LEDs!! I do run all my incandescent signals in my collection on standard signal bulbs. I have sets of GE 69W, Hytron 60W, GE PAR 150W, and Sylvania 69W. Traffic lamps have different filaments that have to be positioned a certain way to get the best light output. You can adjust the lamp by releasing a rod called the bail. The bail holds the lampholder to the reflector and you can twist the socket to best get light output.

As for LEDs I use Dialight, GE GT1, and Quixote

is the heating lamp activated manually or does it automatically kick in when a certain temp is reached?

Interesting, I wonder what was the original controller for those Type Ts?
SeanB~1   [May 29, 2011 at 10:04 AM]
I hope you are going to save this controller and the signals as well.

I don't work down in Ohio. Two buddies of mine live down there and host the traffic signal collector meets. One is the head engineer at the New Philadelphia traffic shop. He opens the cabinets up.

The signals and controllers are going to be saved and hung up on display in the shop.

The original controller was either a KS or even earlier version of the Crouse Hinds mechanical controller.

Why is there a light bulb in there? Is that for testing the lamps before they go in the signal?
basilicon89   [May 30, 2011 at 01:19 AM]
I mentioned why the bulb was in there in the second comment in the thread

This is why you need to read before posting any questions.....read everything.
