What the #@$& !
No really, Delmarva Power is replacing all the electric utilities in my neighborhood. New underground cable, transformers, switches etc. They'r even going to bury the overhead lines on the other side of the neighborhood. Reason being the cable tv lines caught fire not too long ago do to an electrical problem.

Probably they are replacing in parallel before retiring the old one Confused
Mercuryvapor123   [Oct 23, 2014 at 11:34 AM]
Yes, They just dropped it off next to the old one for a quicker change out.

So the new stuff isn't installed yet? They they're replacing the wiring and transformers, I would have expected them to lay the new transformers on a new pad. Confused Also, what are the bollard-type things next to the transformers? Are they fuse cut-outs or something?
Mercuryvapor123   [Oct 24, 2014 at 02:11 AM]
They will have to put them on new pads just haven't dropped them off, these are bigger transformer and won't fit the old pads. No the pedestal on the left is telephone the one on the right is cable TV.

Ah I see. So, because the cable TV lines caught fire, they're replacing the electrical lines? That makes a whole lot of sense. Rolling Eyes Laughing

Ah yes, good ole 50 KVA padmounts, what's your distribution voltage in the area?
LampLover84   [Oct 24, 2014 at 05:56 PM]
One day in my area a Padmount transformer was just spewing oil out all over the place (I don't know if it was PCB containing or not but I assume so for two reasons 1. The transformer was probably the original one from the 1970's 2. It had a sticker that said something to the effect may contain a trace amount of PCBS)
I believe the voltage in my area is 9300 KV To 240/120
I saw them lift the transformer with a crane truck (While it was still leaking oil Shocked ) and they then put a new 50KVA padmount in the old ones place. all in a little over an hour (Well after the PoCo truck arrived that is)

I doubt it had PCBs. Transformers and ballasts after 1980 were labeled as having "NO PCBs" but there was never a designation for the reverse. It wouldn't mention PCBs at all because it wasn't a known carcinogen at the time (hence why it was used on such a wide scale). Same thing with asbestos.

The transformer in front of my house is marked with a black 50 and has a "72" on a white sticker that's peeling off. There's also a blue tag on it that says NON-PCB in huge white letters at the very top of the tag.

Actually there is no such thing as no PCBs They'r just lower content parts per million. So those labels are misleading. I took part in PCB testing on transformers one time and the ones that had those labels did in fact have PCBs. But a very low PPM.
streetlight98   [Oct 24, 2014 at 11:45 PM]
Not enough to cause harm though right? I thought PCBs were supposed to be eliminated altogther? With ballasts, only the capacitors had PCBs, which was eliminated by switching from oil-filled caps to dry-film capacitors. I have to say though, the PCB-containing caps seem to last longer than the non-PCB one (referring to fluorescent ballasts). A lot of 1980s fluorescent ballasts had their caps loose their "capacitiveness" (yeah i coined that lol) and the lamps are under-driven.
Mercuryvapor123   [Oct 25, 2014 at 12:11 AM]
No not enough to harm you. Even the old transformer with higher amounts of PCBs won't harm you unless you bath in it regularly same with creosote. It's more of an environmental issue than a health issue for humans. ARE YOU READY FOR TOMORROW'S INSTALLATION!!!!!!!!! Razz

THE LIGHT?! Shocked Very Happy It's gotta be a M-250R2 or a M-250A2. Very Happy
