The new running-man exit sign was installed last summer during a partial remodeling in my school. For some reason the old one hasn't been removed, so now this exit is identified by both the existent and the new standard!
The older SORTIE seems to have fluorescents now, probably a PL retrofit kit. The brand new unit is very likely LED.
The new ones have been installed here for around 2 year now (although most new installs are still the old red EXIT ones). I don't really like the new signs as I find the old red EXIT signs are much easier to spot when in a busy background.
i personally think symbols are bad because they can be interpreted different ways. words are much simpler. EXIT means exit. You don't have to stop and wonder what the hell a running man means. If there a marathon in that direction? a running track? I sure don't think of EXIT when i see a running man... same for traffic signs. i prefer worded signs over symbols since words are straight-forward and you don't have to guess what the heck the sign is trying to tell you.
if there's a real emergency and you can't speak the language or read the exit signs you can always follow the mob of people headed for the door lol.
I personally think if you're going to a foreign country you should learn the basis of their language.
My avitar warns of lamp bans. What would you interpret if the sign had a symbol of a light bulb with an X over it with an arrow on top and a car making a U turn? To me, that means "lamp bans ahead, seek alternate route" but someone can easily misinterpret the symbols...
lol. Yeah symbols are good when it comes to multiple languages (an octagon with an arrow above it means stop ahead in any language) but different countries have different symbols which is even more confusing. Text signs are easier to understand if you can read the language the sign is in.
I prefer the symbol on the sign and then a sign plaque under it saying the text version. Like a symbol signal aheas sign with a SIGNAL AHEAD plaque under it.
I find that since EXIT is so short it basically acts as its own symbol and plus I'm sure most of the tourists who manage to come here would know at least the word EXIT. Symbols do work but for general and common signs (IE signal ahead, curve). Some uncommon and specific signs would've better in text IMO.
For the red EXIT I find it's easier to pick out, and it's pretty much in line with other emergency equipment (like how fire extinguishers are red).
Most of the traffic signs here in Canada use symbols but the odd and specific ones are still in text.
