Difficult to service, but it didn't deter wire thieves
On Mare Island by the bay in Northern California, these long out-of-use M400's are located in a swampy area that cannot be walked on. Yet, someone managed to remove the wiring from each & every one of these.

Maybe there was a boardwalk here?

sounds probable...i can't just see those lights being there to light Mushy Grass.

Actually, leaning on the pole gives me an idea.... Maybe a couple M-400s being saved...... I'm sure you could walk better with snow shoes.

I'll tell ya, Mare Island had a lot of mysteries. And many cool lights - more photos to come soon.

Is it me or are there a few lightless poles (4th and 5th)
gailgrove   [Aug 09, 2011 at 04:19 PM]
I hate to think about where they likely went Crying or Very sad
streetlight98   [Aug 09, 2011 at 04:22 PM]
me too. Crying or Very sad It's only a matter of time before that happens to all of them.
joe_347V   [Aug 09, 2011 at 04:24 PM]
Yeah sooner of later they're all going to go there. Sad
streetlight98   [Aug 09, 2011 at 04:28 PM]
At least they'll still stay under water, it's not like they'll swimm away. they'll rot after a wile though. Sad
gailgrove   [Aug 09, 2011 at 04:35 PM]
Well maybe if some re-development happens they'll get taken down, but likely scrapped, I still would rather that than rotting away in the ocean.

Me too, but I don't see any develpoment in the marsh. No funds. Confused

Maybe they service these with boats. I think that grass is over water so boats could float on that and you can service the light. Boats is probably how the people who stole the wires stole the wires.
gailgrove   [Dec 31, 2011 at 09:51 PM]
I'm pretty sure nobody services these anymore, they likely where part of a dock or boardwalk of some sort.
streetlight98   [Dec 31, 2011 at 09:52 PM]
Boat's don't need grass to float. Razz Likely there was some sort of boardwalk here at some point like Joe said. Plus, all the wires to these have been cut (look at the empty insulators on the pole.)
LilCinnamon   [Dec 31, 2011 at 11:08 PM]
I meant when they WERE in service, but the boardwalk thing is plausable too.

Someone needs to get out there with a pontoon and a stepladder.
joe_347V   [Nov 12, 2018 at 05:50 PM]
Interesting they're still standing. It seems like each pole has a disconnect and a receptacle. I guess instead of the boardwalk I originally thought, it might been for boats to dock and hook up to shore power.

"It's only a matter of time before that happens to all of them. " Apparently that time was a whole lot longer than we originally thought. That's a good thing right?

I wish I had a boat, and taken those fixtures.
