American Electric 135w Low Pressure Sodium
San Jose, California, June 2011. There were tons of low pressure sodium fixtures in San Jose, from 55 - 180 watts, though they are disappearing. I was on a bus right around dusk, watching for the red glow of these lights just switching on.

Yeah, the San Jose' area is full of LPS! I've seen them too.

I heard the LPS will be replaced with LED...like everywhere else. On Hawaii, where LPS is also plentiful because of the observatory, special yellow LED fixtures are creeping in. It's just a matter of time...

Oh, yes it is!
But isn't LPS supposedly THE most efficient light source? If so then why are they getting rid of them? Maybe the hazard those bulbs pose when tossed in a dumpster and broken? (A fireball?) Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

It is but I suppose someone got suckered in by the LED marketing team to buy them. Rolling Eyes

LPS is 180lm per watt led is only 100lm per watt.

yep LPS is the most efficient light source out there lumen-wise but the human eye can't detect all of the light emitted so LPS light appears dimmer to the human eye than what the lumen ratings suggest. LED is less efficient than HPS but since the human eye can't detect all of HPS's lumens, LEDs appear tobe brighter (when the same wattage is used, but since utility companies drop the wattage too much, a lot of times LEDs are much dimmer than the lights they replaced. Yes they have replaced a lot of these with LED fixtures and they actually are quite nice, I was surprised by that. On our street a 55w was also replaced with an LED, it's the only one on the street, you can really see the difference in light quality and where the light goes. The LPS fixtures light up the street and everything else including the trees, the LED on this street pretty much just lights up the street.

Yeah, HPS has around the same lumens/watt as LED but like what Mike said, LEDs with the same lumens as HPS will appear brighter because of the whiter light. Over here, they utilty droped the wattage too much when switching to LED (and plus the new lumes have horrible distribution) so the newly installed LEDs look noticeably dimmer than the old HPS light.
