On mine the switch can be turned on and off with the door open but the door will only open if the switch is off.

Hmm yeah this is probably just an optional feature. I don't see the big deal since the top terminals are the line terminals, which are live even when the switch is off, so there's still a shock hazard, just not as big of one. There is a way to bypass the safety feature (move a tab inside) but it's a pain in the butt and I don't want to mess the mechanics up.
