RIDOT Crosswalk Light Turned Red!
A rare sight to see one of these red, as people generally do not use the crosswalk button when they cross the street, instead just darting out in front of cars, since it's the law to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk regardless of there being a signal.

Anyway, these normally flash yellow (8" section at the bottom). When someone presses the button, the 8" flashing yellow immediately shuts off and the 12" steady yellow in the middle comes on for 3-5 seconds and then the red comes on and the walk signal is given to the pedestrian. Once the don't walk signal returns, there's a brief pause and the traffic signals revert to flashing yellow.

I've seen standard R-Y-G signals used for crosswalks here but that is not RIDOT's preferred set-up. A flashing yellow is more effective for crosswalks because green means "go!" and there could still be someone in the crosswalk that didn't press the button, so the driver sees the green light and there is a mental conflict. Flashing yellow means "pay attention" more so than a steady green so that's why they use it. Not sure why the bottom yellow is 8" though. Makes for a rather goofy looking signal but I've grown up with these so I like them a lot.

RIDOT also uses these at fire stations and railroad level crossings instead of standard signals. I've seen a few installations use all 12" signal sections too, with the flashing yellow being 12" like the others.

Wow! I have never seen them on red Lol and it looks like the reds are even Led Lol

Yep RIDOT LED'ed them all several years ago. I've seen some in Woonsocket and Central Falls that are still incandescent though (regular signals). Too risky for the RIDOT workers to venture into the 'hood. Laughing

How is it risky? Is that area a bad part of town?
streetlight98   [Jul 02, 2017 at 04:40 PM]
Because it's in the 'hood (the ghetto).

BTW, The old street light was a 400W HPS GE M-400. It was replaced sometime between the fall of 2016 and spring of 2017 with a 133W LED.

Seriously? In the hood (ghetto)?? I find that slightly offensive. Just cause an area is run down or otherwise decayed doesn't mean your going to get robbed at a stoplight or a similar event. You can find "risk" wherever people are. It's not like crime doesn't happen in so called "high class" areas either.

I don't know why you would find that offensive living over 1500 miles away. How would you know anything about Rhode Island? See for yourself my friend. Over 400 crimes a year committed in Central Falls and Central Falls is ONE SQUARE MILE BIG! Literally just over one square mile in area!
Providence is even worse.

How bout instead... you attempt to see it from my perspective? Wink

Your right. I wouldn't know anything in specific about RI. Much like I wouldn't expect you to know about texas. However define ghetto? Most people's definition seems to revolve around either the people or the condition of things in a particular area. If I went by either alone alot of areas might be a "ghetto".

Furthermore my statement still remains despite statistics. Risk exists wherever people do.

I could try to see it from your perspective if I knew what your perspective was.

By "ghetto" I meant a sketchy part of town where you wouldn't want to be alone at night (high crime, unfriendly area, run-down, etc.). Certain neighborhoods always in the news for crime where there's trash everywhere. I didn't mean to imply anything about the people that live there. People of all races/ethnicities live in sketchy parts of town. I'm calling the place ghetto, not the people living there. Basically like called an area a "trailer park area".

It is different for everyone, Alalacis tells everyone he comes from a " Denmark ghetto " his words. Danish ghettos have villagers, just like Iceland and Norway so I mean ghetto does not mean the people just means the place Laughing
