Hubbell RMG in Rhode Island
Yeah these were used on the freeways a little bit. I've never seen one on a truss pole before. I've only seen them before on davits. They're not common at all though. There are a couple of these (including this one) on Rte 138 at US 1 and on Rte 24 right near the Mass-RI line.

Yup, I remember the Hubbells in RI. They were installed on Route 10 east of I-95 approaching the eastern end of the freeway on the davit poles. The davits that are directly over I-95 had HPS OV-25s. East of I-95 there were mercury M-400s, changed out to the Hubbells around 1988, only to be changed out again in the 90s and 00s due to road upgrades and stuff. The truss arms on 10 west of I-95 also had mercs in the 80s, there was a variety of makes but mostly M-400s and OV-25s. On I-95 from around the interchange with Route 10 south had HPS Westy OV-25s on twin davits in the median. These poles and the fixtures were mostly replaced by new twin davits and M-400R2s in the 90s during road work, but they left a couple of the older davits further south. You know when you head on southbound 95 approaching Warwick when the style of the twin davits change to a very round shape? The last pole just before these had an OV-25 until the early 2000s or so. The very round davits had ITT 25s but many of them were spot replaced by various makes, including a few larger Hubbells, before they changed all of them to the present M-400R2s. One best memory of the highway lighting in RI, I remember a pocket of GE Form 400 Powerpacks, maybe on I-195 near the MA state line. They were on tapered elliptical arms and it was at least close to a complete run, it seems like almost every single one installed in the late 50s was still working as of 1982 or so! They don't make em now like they used to!

Do you mean the end of Rte 10 that's near Roger Williams Zoo in the Cranston area or the end that's closer to Rte 146? the end closer to the zoo is all M-250R2s on short davits now. and the truss arms to mentioned all have M-250R2s and OVZs.

When you meantioned the poles change on I-95, did you mean here in Warwick? Or did you mean here in Providence? on the short old davits I saw a 1982 picture and apparently they all originally had flatbottom Westinghouse OV-25s from 1957 (since that's when I-95 was opened). now they all have 250W HPS M-250R2s except for a couple 400W HPS newer M-400s that were just spot installed at a couple of sharp turns in the Providence area for more light.

Hmm I never knew there were lights on those tall round davits before the M-400R2s. I figured the M-400R2s were the originals. Now the lights are M-400R2s and newer M-400s. Some of the lights are relay controlled and other sections are photocell-controlled. I don't know why it's not consistant though. every mile stretch or so it alternates. i never knew they used HPS Westies here either. Were they the older round style silverliners or the later boxy "l-series" lights? Man it would have been awesome to have been around when there was such a variety here. There still is a good variety but nothing like what you describe!

i never saw the RLGs or ITT 25s on the very round davits. Were they HPS? If so i wonder why they changed them all to M-400R2s. Neutral as for the powerpacks, I'm guessing these are the poles? and yeah Joe Maurath's collection has many of the same lights that were used in RI and they mostly all work after 50+ years of dusk to dawn service. Very few but some even had their original lamp and photocell. those are among Joe's most prized lights.
