RCA D52W15B Trio of CRT Tubes Removed from a dead 52" rear projection TV. These tubes are for generating images to be projected to the main screen. The red wire on one of the tube is the high voltage from the flyback transformer. Other two has them but not visible here. From left to right is red, green, and blue. Red has a red filter in front of the tube while the green one is a cyan filter and the blue is a clear filter. Why is that? RCA D52W15B Trio of CRT Tubes

Removed from a dead 52" rear projection TV. These tubes are for generating images to be projected to the main screen. The red wire on one of the tube is the high voltage from the flyback transformer. Other two has them but not visible here.

From left to right is red, green, and blue. Red has a red filter in front of the tube while the green one is a cyan filter and the blue is a clear filter. Why is that?

The CRTs are made by Philips and are model:

We have some of those in our Sony 65" Rear Projection TV.

Imagine seeing a CRT in that size. Shocked Would weight a TON. How I can light these up? Anyone know? Would be awesome if I could light these up. Deep red, deep green and deep blue. Don't need to be permanent, just long enough for a pic.

Need to rewire the coils that goes on the neck of the tubes. I cut the wires too short. Embarrassed They need to work or only one point of light will be in the center of the tubes.

I am thinking of using the portable B/W TV and swapping the tubes. Would that work? Confused

I unfortunately never saw a projection TV in action. At home we always had CRT TVs, and now LCD and plasma TVs are replacing CRTs (not at home but around).

I think the biggest CRT TV is 40", not sure. The tube of a 27" CRT TV is pretty hard to lift, I don't want to see a 40" Shocked

im Guessing you can Light it on High Voltage.

If you power it up and do not apply a focus voltage the spot will be very large on the screen. The filters are there to correct for the phosphors not having quite the correct colour output, filtering out the spurious output colours on the 2 tubes.

Note that there is a cooling xhamber at the end of each CRT, filled with a glycol coolant. Messy if you open it and somewhat toxic if you touch or drink it ( it smells very sweet as it is a ethylene glycol based coolant).

How toxic is that stuff? Cuz I didn't know there was anything between the filter and CRT. Made one big mess when I opened the red tube assembly. Spilled some of that on my shorts and shirt. I removed both of them quickly as I can. I cleaned up that mess quickly with lot of paper towels.

Begining in the World cup soccer 98, here in Israel there was a massive demand for rear projection TVs, and all of these were CRT, like in this picture. Several LCD rear projection TVs were also exists, but during the first decade of 2000, they are all phased out and completely disappeared from Israel in favor of wide screen HD ready and full HD LCD and Plasma TVs. Today, there is no any signs of memory from these rear projection TVs in Israel, so the israelis are all forgoted this technology of TVs.
The only places in Israel, where the rear projection screens (CRT) remained were at arcades.

The 40" weighs over 100kg (220lb) and comes with handles attached to the set, so that you can use 4 people to move the set around. It is really heavy, but very good picture for it's time.

The coolant is as toxic as car antifreeze, but is highly concentrated, you probably saw it left a stain with a sweet smell.

Nowdays rear projection is loosing ground to large LCD and plasma, as they can be made thinner, the rear projector needs the space for an optical box and mirrors, and the screen is not as bright in showrooms. The front projection units are becoming cheaper and are now starting to move out of the role of powerpoint projection into big screen on the cheap.
