Interesting, this reminds me of one of those store displays where they show the different colour temperatures.

I think this thing was probably used kinda like that. It came with different color lamps but that scary looking rotary switch only lights one at a time.

yes! it also looks like it could have been used to light a sign, maybe all cathodes of the lamp are always preheated and a motor turns the switch making them flash in a pattern?
