Looks good, are you going to install a new ballast?
GullWhiz   [Oct 09, 2010 at 06:07 PM]
Yeah I was puzzled why this one did not have the bump while mine did but still no PC socket!
lite_lover   [Oct 10, 2010 at 12:33 AM]
Yes,I will eventually install a new ballast.

in my experience these are even less common than the already sparse LM 400's. I've only seen Three total.

I also wonder why the 175 has a flat door while the 400 & 1000 have an Angled lense. it's not a bother just something I notice. unlike the OV-15 & Model 13 which also angle out like their bigger siblings.

Hmm I've never seen a Unistyle 400 in person in all my life. Only the Unistyle 175s. they seem to have been somewhat common here in the late 60s, though GE lights were mostly used. Back in the 60s NECo used GE, AE, Westinghouse, and LM. Then in the 90s HPS takeover, primarily GE was used but also Thomas & Betts and Cooper OVCs (strictly in 50W HPS for Cooper OVCs though)

The angled lens was advertised as throwing more light forward in high traffic areas (and this wouldn't be ideal for a residenial road so this fixture didn't have it and the model 13's angle is very slight).

I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine the angled reflector also allows more room to stuff the capacitors in too so the fixture could potentially be more compact so it would save on shipping. Now with smaller caps and ballasts, fixtures can be made more compact without the need of the angled door. Plus with all the dark-sky crap angled lenses are becoming a no-no.

you did make a Valid point on the angled lenses definetly. though I notice most streetlight arms angle up just abit anyway.
streetlight98   [Apr 23, 2014 at 01:56 AM]
Yeah I think street light arms are manufactured with a 2-degree angle upward but with the weight of the fixture, the arm might sag a little anyways. I've noticed that new M-250R2s installed here are mounted aimed upward a little bit. Just slightly. I've seen pictures of 115s aimed sky high though lol. Coopers always seem to be level here, except for the OVCs installed in the early 90s which seem to have been aimed down. It could have been to make the lens level but i think the linemen were just in a rush and didn't want to fuss around with a four-bolt slipfitter. Laughing

I've seen a bunch of these. In Ontario you can find them in small towns around Simcoe County. I think all the ones I've seen are mercs too. Never seen them in the cities, as long as Iv'e been around for atleast.

These were only made in MV so any HPS ones were converted and were MV at one point. Same with the 60s GEs except for the M-400A, which was made in 400W HPS.

There used to be some around the Markham area too, HPS refits from the 60s. Sadly I think every single one got killed off by the waffle invasion. Sad

I still know of some around the TTC subway stations, those are still mercs too.
