ComEd installing a new light
Terrible picture I know, but I was driving and noticed a ComEd crew installing a new street light at this intersection. The old light and pole had been gone for a couple weeks, though a fragment of the pole remained. Maybe a car struck it? The old light was a GE M250 merc. This new one is a GE M400R3 FCO 400w HPS, although I wouldn't be surprised if they actually are using a Merc lamp in this fixture like the other one I took a pic of.

They couldn't use a mercury lamp in a HPS fixture, it won't work Wink

I was under the impression that higher wattage HPS lamps that run on 240v could run the same wattage MV lamps, with the ignitor removed, of course.

well maybe with the igniter removed, but I highly doubt they would do that, perhaps it was converted to MH.
gramirez2012   [Jun 07, 2011 at 09:49 PM]
ComEd doesn't use MH, as far as I'm aware.

What I meant was a MH ballast was installed, which can run a mercury lamp.

These have yellow wattage stickers though. Confused

For higher wattage HPS lamps, MV will work on a dead ignitor. I found that under GE's HPS troubleshooting guide on their website. I don't think a utility would do that because in the long run it may ruin the ballast or lamp.

If you haven't already seen, here is a better picture of this light: Pic
