Lights of America Phosphored HPS
This is the last of the 50w diffuse HPS that came from the five original Lights of America security light fixtures I used to have (4 of which suffered ballast failures). These are interesting lamps: The bulb is the same shape as the GE HPS lamps made in Holland, but has a Philips arc tube design and etch; also, the arc tube has a starting antenna and the coating appears to be a /DX mercury lamp phosphor, as it glows pink under black light (and slightly after the lamp starts as well). This lamp is almost at EOL now and cycles once every few hours so I pulled it from dusk-dawn service.

why would a HPS lamp have a Phosphorus coating?

Probably just a cost-saving measure. Now, the phosphor probably costs more than a simple diffusing powder but the demand for diffuse HPS lamps is quite low so by buying the /DX phosphor in huge quantities (for MV lamps mainly, but also for HPS and MH) it makes the final unit price cheaper. At least that's my take on it. Seems to be more of a thing with smaller companies where buying one think in bulk would be appealing. With a giant like GE or Phillips they make so many lamps that they'd probably buy both powders in bulk lol. I've also seen small brands use the simple diffuse coating on MV lamps too (Plusrite and Feit/Utilitech for example) which makes for an interesting effect. Diffuse MVs look like really aged /DX MVs with the phosphor degraded to the point where it doesn't do anything but block light. If you want the aged look it really works well.
