An extreme macro shot of a tiny SMD LED. LED is about 1mm and 2mm. I think the die is about .5mm X .5mm x .5mm, so yeah it's TINY!

my laptop has SMD LEDS lighting the buttons that do light up and some indicator lamps....these things are tiny and it makes me wonder if SMD stands for Super Micro Die.

Die is same size in SMDs or 5mm LEDs. SMD would stand for Surface Mounted Devices.

And just think that originally these were hand assembled before being encapsulated, manual placing of the dice on the header and manual gold bonding. Later automation took over a lot, but a surprisingly large amount of work in electronics manufacture involves dexterous manual assembly.
