Southern Autoflow Controller
These are some views of a Southern Autoflow controller. In later on-board controller signals the contact camshaft was horizontal run by a 1 RPM Synchron motor. This more compact design allowed 4 and 6 contact controllers to fit into 4-way signals. The 6 contact design allowed independent illumination of red and green indications, providing what are common (no overlap) sequences.

Were there ever this style that had flashing yellow or something? Maybe a flashing red?

Not sure of the question. There were beacons that had flashers built into them. A handful are still in service today.
