Chrome Fluorescent Ceiling Fixture
This old preheater has lampholders marked Hygrade-Sylvania. I think that means it's from before 1942. It takes six 20W fluorescent lamps.

Whoa! That's a very nice find! I've never seen a fluorescent light like that before. Shocked

That's awesome, have you tried to put lamps to it and light it up?
A_lights   [Jun 20, 2010 at 07:15 PM]
Back in the day people probably loved those just as much as we do now Smile

I always wondered if fixtures like this really stood out back in the day.
BTW, I just posted a pic of it lit.

What kind of ballasts does it have?
DimBulb   [Dec 01, 2010 at 10:08 PM]
It has six choke ballasts, 3 in the top, 3 in the bottom.
SeanB~1   [Dec 02, 2010 at 04:21 PM]
I could run it here with just 3 ballasts, though the wiring in the tube will be a lot tighter.....
icefoglights   [Dec 03, 2010 at 12:57 AM]
I've seen F17T8 arrangements here using an instant start ballast and two tubes wired in series. A setup like that would need no wires through the center tube.
Making this T8 would be fundamentally wrong though.

I wonder what this thing sound like when firing up! Dave Lay tells me a bunch of sounds preheat fluorescents makes....they don't always all sound the same!
DimBulb   [Dec 21, 2010 at 02:42 AM]
Some just kinda click but others sound more musical like twinkling Christmas lights.

sweet! so Hygrade-Sylvania is pre-1942 stuff? Awesome! that means that this fixture that i restored is from the early 40s! Shocked . The ballast that it was made with is this GE. It has the same Hygrade-Sylvania lampholders with a black starter socket built in on one socket.
