Cluster of Lights!
|
Here's Route 10 at the Reservoir Ave exit. Here we have three different light poles from three different eras. The LED pole is obviously the newest, from this year in fact. The truss pole itself is newer than the long armed davit, but the truss pole is a replacement for another truss pole that was there before the long armed davit.
Originally when Rte 10 was constructed, the freeway ended here, so all traffic had to take the ramp here (where the truss light is). Then in the 60s some time, they extended Rte 10 to meet I-95 and then after that, had Rte 10 end where it ends today at Park Ave, right near Roger Williams Park (though Rte 10 was supposed to extend down towards the airport in Warwick, which never happened). So when the freeway was extended, RIDOT-owned davits went up for the new section of freeway.
The truss and tapered elliptical poles were owned by Narragansett Electric at the time while I think the davits were always owned by RIDOT. The long-armed davits were origially PC-controlled, but got converted to a relay. This one still has a PC and the light looked pretty new so the probably didn't wire that pole to the relay, explaining why they're replacing it now. RIDOT installed new LED poles but the LED poles are ONLY replacing the NGrid-owned trusses and tapered ellipticals. This long-arm RIDOT davit is the only davit being replaced by a new pole as of now. They're being very conservative with the LED fixtures, probably due to their cost compared to the HPS FCO lights they've been using.
As of 10/30/2014, the LED davit is the only pole left out of this trio. The long arm davits in the background are safe, as there are no signs of new poles going in (no new pole bases or any activity at all).
